Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has created new opportunities to establish Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning that is more interactive, contextual, and aligned with students’ characteristics in the digital era. This study aims to analyze the implementation of ChatGPT as an AI-based learning medium and its contribution to the learning motivation of ninth-grade students at SMP Islam Al-Azami Cianjur. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques, with data analyzed through the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings revealed that the use of ChatGPT enhanced students’ engagement through classroom discussions, question exploration, and critical evaluation of AI-generated responses. The improvement in learning motivation was reflected in students’ increased confidence in asking questions, greater ease in understanding learning materials, higher enthusiasm during the learning process, and their ability to connect PAI concepts with everyday life. The successful integration of ChatGPT depended not only on technological sophistication but also on the teacher’s role as a facilitator and validator who ensured that AI utilization remained aligned with Islamic values, ethical principles, and instructional objectives.
